Basmatna (بصمتنا): Exploring the Syrian Refugee Crisis and Transforming Our Communities

Qatar Foundation International (QFI) partnered with Global Nomads Group in spring 2016 for a trilateral virtual exchange project: Basmatna – Exploring the Syrian Refugee Crisis and Transforming our Communities. Youth from schools in the USA and Qatar (Washington Latin Public Charter School in Washington D.C. and Qatar Academy in Doha, Qatar) connected with Syrian refugees through Project Amal au Salam in Jordan to share their stories and gain a firsthand perspective on the Syrian crisis and the role of youth in international dialogue.

Prior to the two video conferences which were held in March 2016, all groups prepared offline using a shared curriculum, produced in both English and Arabic. All youth involved used QFI’s YALLAH (Youth Allied to Learn, Lead, and Help) platform to connect. The video conference conversation then allowed youth to explore more in depth about conflict and transforming their communities, as well as to connect as individuals to tell their stories. The video conference culminated with youth submitting artistic responses reflecting on the virtual exchange project (e.g. writing, poetry, photography, music, art) that will be gathered and published in the Hurriyah online magazine.
