The Faces and Voices of the Refugee Crisis

Through this lesson plan, students will analyze the stories of individuals to gain a more complete and empathetic understanding of the experiences of the refugees we see in the news. Students will evaluate the question: Who is a refugee?

This lesson was originally created for middle school language arts but can be easily adapted for elementary and high school humanities classes.

This downloadable zip file includes four resources: a lesson plan, accompanying PowerPoint, notes, and a handout.

This resource was created during a QFI-sponsored workshop, in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma, the National Council for History Education, and Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migration, “The Middle East Refugee Crisis in Historical Context: Teaching for Understanding” held June 21-23, 2016 in Norman, Oklahoma.
