People and Place: The Zabbaleen, Cairo’s Garbage Workers

In this unit, a part of the People and Place curriculum from UT Austin, students learn about the Zabbaleen, Cairo's garbage workers. Students will understand the success of the Zabbaleen in adapting to an urban environment and connect the urbanization of Cairo to the growth of the Zabbaleen. Students will learn that while the planning and maintenance of urban infrastructure may vary, key issues remain the same across cities. The unit includes five activities designed to strengthen social studies skills and culminates in a final activity where students apply the knowledge they have gained to design their own city, considering geographical composition and necessary accommodations needed for expansion and urbanization. All materials needed for these activities and assessment are included in the resource.
