Rethinking the Region: New Approaches to the 9-12 US Curriculum on the Middle East and North Africa

This curriculum was born out of an extensive analysis of textbooks used in US high schools to teach about the Middle East and North Africa region. The initial research indicated that most textbooks perpetuate a narrative of clashing civilizations, rather than offering nuanced explorations of how societies meet and interact with each other. Based on this research, the authors identified five themes and developed detailed, web-based teaching materials to offer robust and accessible alternatives to high school teachers.
